Herbal support in the post partum period

The postpartum period deserves as much support as possible. Alongside practical help from the people around you, additional supportive measures can aid recovery after pregnancy and birth while also supporting your breastfeeding journey.

Herbal medicine in the postpartum period

One naturopathic approach I often use is botanical, or herbal, medicine, which draws on the medicinal properties of plants to support healing. Herbal medicine can be used in several forms, and each offers different benefits during the postpartum period.

  • Herbal teas: A good option for people who enjoy hot drinks. Teas can also encourage hydration, which is especially important while breastfeeding, and they also create a natural opportunity to pause and rest.
  • Tinctures: Liquid herbal extracts, usually made with alcohol, though non-alcohol versions are also available. Many patients find the taste unpleasant at first, and the amount of alcohol in a typical dose is extremely small.
  • Capsules: A convenient option for those who want the benefits of herbal medicine in a more familiar form.

Examples of supportive herbs

Some herbs are especially valued during the postpartum period for their nourishing and supportive properties.

  • Nettle tea: A favourite postpartum herb of mine because it is nourishing and may help support lactation.
  • Avena sativa (oatstraw) tea: Often used to support the nervous system, which can feel more vulnerable during this time.

Herbs commonly used to support milk supply

  • Fennel
  • Blessed thistle
  • Fenugreek
  • Moringa
  • Milk thistle

There are many other herbal options that may be helpful during the postpartum period. Choosing the right one can be challenging, especially if you have allergies, underlying health conditions, or are taking medications.

In all cases, speak with your health-care provider before starting any herbal medicine so you can choose the option that is safest and most appropriate for you.
