Keeping Your Newborn Safe in the Summer Heat

As summer approaches, heat and humidity are already beginning to rise across Southern Ontario. For families with newborns, the summer months can offer valuable opportunities for outdoor activity, fresh air, and emotional well-being. However, periods of extreme heat can also create additional concerns for infants.

Babies and young children, along with older adults, are more vulnerable to the effects of heat. It is important to take proactive steps to help protect them and keep them comfortable during hot weather.

The following tips can help you navigate the summer heat with your newborn, while still enjoying seasonal activities safely.

  • Feed on demand. Your newborn will receive the hydration they need from feeds, i.e. breast milk and/or formula. You may notice your baby cues for feeds more frequently during periods of increased heat.
  • If you are breastfeeding, prioritize your own hydration by drinking extra water and including hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Plan outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning before 10 or 11 a.m., or early evening after 5 p.m. Whenever possible, stay indoors during the hottest hours, typically between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Choose shaded outdoor spaces, such as parks with tree cover or areas protected by a sun umbrella. Avoid exposing your baby to direct sunlight.
  • Dress your baby in a lightweight cotton layer and a sun hat to help keep them cool and protected.
  • Monitor diaper output to ensure your baby’s usual pattern remains consistent.

Whatever your plans are this summer, enjoy these moments with your baby while taking simple precautions to help protect them from the heat.
